Keeping Busy with Fall Activities

Halloween is nearly here, and Eta Phi has been busy as ever.. On Oct. 8, we welcomed Zac Humphrey, Chapter Field Representative of Kappa Kappa Psi, to Syracuse U. for the day, and his visit was a great way for our chapter to discuss some new ideas and plan for the future. We also were able to show Zac the Syracuse area (he had never visited our campus before), and we are very thankful that he was able to take two days out of his schedule to get to know our brothers.

Our bands on campus have been busy as well. The Syracuse University Marching Band is preparing for a special appearance at the New York State Field Band Conference on Oct. 31st, and we can’t wait to talk with the many local high school band members that will be at the show. Many SU students hail from the Central New York region, and the NYSFBC has always been a great opportunity for us to extend Eta Phi’s community outreach. Earlier this month, we also attended and set-up/took down equipment during SU’s Wind Ensemble & Symphony Band concerts, and we are very proud to have a number of our brothers as members in those ensembles.

Speaking of Halloween, we took a trip to Screamer’s Hollow Haunted Village in Sterling, NY last weekend. It was a great social event during this busy time of the semester, despite heavy rain and pretty cold weather!

Open Recruitment Announced!

Open recruitment for Eta Phi has been announced! Recruitment is open to any student who participates in a band program on campus, and pamphlets will be handed out to those interested during Syracuse University Marching Band rehearsals this week. We encourage anyone interested in learning more about our chapter and our fraternity to join us in our open recruitment events. It is a great way to get to know about our organization and all 33 of our brothers!

Welcome back!

The fall semester has started here at Syracuse University, and all of our brothers are already active in serving our band programs. As is tradition, Eta Phi was present every day during August’s band camp for the SU Marching Band. This year, we were not only able to help the band students get settled in on campus, but many of our brothers were able to hold leadership roles in the band as section leaders, assistants, and drum major . We even were able to donate extra food to the local Rescue Mission, and we hope to expand our charitable efforts in the future.

As the new school year begins, we are looking forward to a number of exciting projects in Eta Phi. Our website is planning to be updated with new content and multimedia, and we are working to participate in new service events that will increase our chapter’s goal of promoting musical advancement in the Syracuse area. Overall, it seems that we are going to have a great year in serving the bands and striving for the highest!

On behalf of the Eta Phi Chapter, congratulations is in order to the newly initiated Alpha Epsilon Brothers! The Alpha Epsilon Membership Class has already assumed numerous officer and committee chair positions, and will continue to play a vital role in the chapter’s success.

Also, congratulations to the Brothers of the graduating class! Eta Phi had 7 Brothers walk at graduation representing a variety of colleges within the Syracuse community. Congratulations again, and best of luck to all of you as you set out into the real world.

Lastly, congratulations to the Eta Phi Chapter as a whole on having such a successful year! Much was accomplished and the expectations of serving the Syracuse University Bands were greatly exceeded. Keep up the great work going into the 2010-2011 school year!

Liverpool Show!

This weekend, the Brothers of Eta Phi and the Sisters of Eta Alpha continued our community outreach program by helping out with a local band festival. Liverpool High School held a show at Central Square High School, hosting several local marching bands in both exhibition and competition. Brothers and Sisters showed up early to lend a hand and were kept busy all night setting up, running concessions, running scores for the judges, escorting bands and security/ crowd control.

This service activity is becoming a regular event for Eta Phi, and we find it rewarding for several reasons. The parents and event coordinators truly appreciate our help at such a hectic event. Several Brothers and Sisters are from the local high schools and this is a chance for them to reconnect with their “alma maters” and give a little back to the programs that helped them so much. Also, several students and alumni from Syracuse University are involved with the local these bands, and it was great to see them there. Finally, these band festivals are a great opportunity to encourage high school students to continue their musical involvement in college, either at Syracuse University or any other college they decide to attend.

All in all, it was a great weekend for a little service and a little fun. Congratulations to all of the bands that participated!
